MOT

MOT — what it is and what to expect

What gets checked, what a fail or advisory means, and what happens next.

An MOT is a yearly safety and emissions test required for almost every car on UK roads over three years old. It's set by the DVSA, not the garage — we just carry it out for you.

What gets checked

  • Brakes, tyres, suspension and steering
  • Lights and indicators (including reverse, plate and fog)
  • Mirrors, wipers, washers, screen condition
  • Seatbelts and seat fittings
  • Bodywork (sharp edges and structural rust)
  • Emissions and exhaust
  • Fuel system for leaks
  • Number plate condition and visibility

The MOT does not check engine performance, gearbox condition, clutch wear, or general reliability — those are service items.

Pass, advisory, fail

  • Pass — you get a new MOT certificate valid for 12 months.
  • Pass with advisory — passed, but items are wearing and likely to need attention before next year.
  • Fail (major or dangerous) — the car can't be driven on the road until those items are fixed and retested.

If it fails

We'll talk you through what failed, quote for the repair, and book the retest. Most retests within 10 working days are free if we did the original test.
